In and out on my self-host journey

As times go by one finds itself testing new software and realizing some apps that used to be useful are not anymore.

Outs

One of the first things I stopped trying to implement was Single sign-on with Authentik I quickly realized I didn't want to spend the time to learn it and make it work with not supported software.

The next one I dropped was Wger the software was ok but too big of a setup for what it did and never managed to fully understand its UI. For me, it was more in the way than it was helpful. I haven't yet decided what to replace it with.

Ollama is another out, at least for now. The lack of a dedicated graphic card makes it slow to use and while fun I don't find myself trying to use it often. I normally go with other free available alternatives.

Not decided

I may remove Gotify, it works as expected but I'm the person that doesn't like to be bothered by notifications, so we are not made for each other. For now, I'm keeping it but I never use it.

Photoprism, I always said that I don't love it but it works fine. Probably it doesn't fit well in my current setup.

In

I recently added Lidarr to my *arr suite, which works as well as any other arr software.

CalibreWeb was something that I wanted to add forever but never managed to get the time for. Lately, my wife is reading a lot on mobile so was a good excuse to set it up. My only problem is that I had a lot of .mobi files that one wouldn't be able to read on the browser but I converted them quickly with Calibre.

Memories for NextCloud, I always complained that NextCloud images app is VERY slow and hard to use, and this is the only reason I tested Photoprism to begin with.

Well, I heard about Memories and wanted to try it, and does pretty much everything I wanted with a better integration than Photoprism (I needed to re-scan manually to see new photos for some reason).
I also took the chance to install other apps that make photo viewing faster. Was probably on me that was slow to begin with, like Preview Generator and Recognize. Since this had a lot of PHP ini files and nginx config tinkering I took the time to fix other NextCloud warnings as well.
While the face recognition is not as good as Photoprism, if it works stable and fast enough I'll shut down and keep only one app for all docs.

I use Obisidian for a lot of note-taking at work, for my personal life I was using it as a to-do list, but over time has grown more than desired, and is hard to keep tabs. Recently added Plane to my setup and I like it quite a bit so I think will keep it for a long time.

Tiny Tiny RSS is my last addition, I use it mostly to keep track of local news as I'm not following software practices as hard as I did before, I may extend its usage but for now, I'm not opening it as often as I thought I would

Recap

As you can see I don't add or remove too much, these have been the changes of the last year.

I try to keep my footprint of services small and only things that I use.

Lidarr was me realizing I don't have any offline system for music and if I ever quit Spotify I don't have anything to transition into.

Memories is a compromise of keeping it simple with less software while losing a bit of quality on face recognition and auto-tagging.

I'm still looking for an exercise tracker to self-host, for now, I keep using my watch Samsung app in the meantime.

My wife also is writing a book so the idea to self-host some software to help here is also very appealing, but haven't found anything that could help her yet.
